Luke’s entries for “Water”. Click on each photo to view larger.

“I shot these with a 60’s Olympus Pen EE S, half-frame point and shoot. It uses half of your standard 35mm frame, doubling your amount of shots per roll with its viewfinder at a vertical state. I like this camera because it reminds me of 8mm film, and having 2 shots per 35mm frame, it makes me think of my next shot as I am shooting the current one. It’s something that I find myself constantly doing, often 3-4 shots deep in my mind, even before I’ve taken my first. So each shot in each diptych was taken after the next and printed on the same frame.

I am a big fan of impressionist art, and since I can’t paint, I like to play with soft focusing. New shapes are formed that you don’t normally see, colors blend into each other naturally, and everything looks like a memory where moments and feelings are remembered rather than detailed images. And being able to evoke different feelings just by altering perspectives is one of the many aspects of photography that I love. “

A quick post-win interview with our current champion Christian Cook!

Explain that naked molotov cocktail picture from last week’s “Nightlife” challenge? Who was that and what was going on?!

For some reason when I heard Night Life for the theme I envisioned a naked dude holding a molotov cocktail…I wanted to have a car facing the subject in order the create a gaze so to speak, in this case the implied driver of the vehicle coming towards some naked guy in the middle of the road. The headlights aren’t as obvious as I would have liked, but I still think it’s a powerful image. We captured it shooting Ilford HP5 400, and I like the character of the film for that photo, and I’m happy I got to enter a film photo. The who wishes to remain anonymous.

What made you choose “water” as this week’s theme?

I spend as much time as I can in the water, it’s on my mind a lot. Underwater photography is really difficult, which appeals to me as well, and I just thought it would be cool to pick a word that has a broad range of application and interpretation. I saw a photo of Luke standing on a boat shooting his entry, I’m stressed.

Any hint as to what you’ll do for this photo?

My typical approach to photography is to go out in the world and let photos happen naturally, so I’ve been spending a lot of time in the water.

How do you know your challenger Luke?

Me and Luke met through a casual encounters craigslist ad.

What do you think Luke will do for his photos?

I have no idea what luke will shoot, except that I know he was on a boat and I’m jealous.

Stay tuned to see what Christian and Luke create for this week’s “Water” challenge! Their photos will be posted monday morning and voting opens for YOU to decide!

While the Photoboxers are shooting their photos, let’s get to know our new challenger Luke Aguinaldo:

  • What kind of camera do you use? anything i can get my hands on
  • Strengths: I am most confident in motion picture, from tv commercials to narratives, but like most DP’s my foundation was set in photography. I love to shoot narratives. Even when I shoot stills my goal is to convey a perspective that tells some kind of story.
  • Weaknesses: I dont really own a camera, well i have a couple point and shoots, thats it. I usually borrow or rent equipment as I go. I don’t mind it so much, it forces me to learn how to use different types of cameras.

So we have a TLR-shooting film guy challenging a filmmaker…very cool! I have no doubt both challengers will create something awesome because as Luke mentioned, at the core of any great photo is a great story.

Looking forward to seeing what Christian and Luke create for Match #010, the Water challenge!

Christan Cook’s entries for “Nightlife”:

With my photos I wanted to subvert the typical notion of nightlife photography. We see a flood of homogenous nightlife photos posted every week taken at the various venues around town shot with a dslr and a strobe, and I wanted to challenge and shift the norm and present my own version of the reality of night; darkness, anonymous figures, confusion, fire and weirdness.

While the photoboxers are working on their entries, let’s get to know them. You’re looking at the work of Tina Jo.

  • Shoots with: Canon 7D, Canon AE-1
  • Strengths: I use lights well and good with portraits and abstracts.
  • Weaknesses: finding new angles
Her photos can range from poignant portraits to the playfully ethereal. I love photographers who dabble in film because it somehow transforms their digital photography into something more sentimental. I am looking forward to seeing what Tina Jo comes up with for Match #008: Transformation. Be sure to give her a follow!
