A quick interview with current champion Phil The Photomancer:

What was the reason for choosing “adventure” as this week’s theme?

Thinking of “Adventure” just came organically to me. I actually had trouble thinking of a theme for this week and a couple of the themes I wanted to use had already been featured a few weeks back. However, I think “Adventure” will get myself and my challenger moving both physically and creatively.

What was your last adventure?

Honestly? The day my son was born. As much as I had prepared with my wife, that day was the most intense few hours of my life. A concentrated dose of fear, nervousness, and anxiety followed by equal amounts of overwhelming joy.

Any hints to what we can expect for your next photos?

I actually went on an adventure to get the inspiration for my entry for “Adventure”.

What’s the next adventure you are looking forward to?

I’m in the Army. There is always adventure. ;)

Any advice for budding photographers out there?

Never stop shooting. Great photographers were once budding hobbyists like yourselves. Trust me, you will discover and understand yourself and the talents you possess this way more than any other method.

Photo by our friend Kaveh Kardan

I interviewed our current winner Dallas Nagata White about “Sugar City”.

What made you come up with “Sugar City” as the theme?

I was inspired to think of the theme “Sugar City” because I wanted to take the idea of “Candyland” in a new, possibly more mature direction. There are definitely all kinds of ways to interpret the “sugar” part, and adding an urban twist could give it a little edge.
What can we expect from you for this challenge?
Right now I’ve got saccharine neon colors on my mind, which is perfect for the current fashion throwbacks to the bright kaleidoscopes of the 70s and 90s!
What do you think your opponent John Hook will do?
I’m not sure what my opponent, John Hook, will do, but I’m expecting to be blown out of the water by his quirky brand of genius!
Who or what inspires you creatively?
Currently, photographer Guy Aroch is one of my biggest creative inspirations for the way his work conveys effortless, spontaneous captures.
And since the topic is Sugar City, what is your favorite candy?
My favorite candy to eat is fine dark chocolate raspberry truffles…but it’s not that visually stimulating to me, so I doubt I’ll be using it as inspiration for this project. Maybe it will be my reward for when I’m done! :)

Ji Sub jeong’s entry - click on each photo to view larger.

“I wanted to focus on three topics as I was creating the photos: the nature, the people around us, and the place in which we live. I wanted to capture moments that would either tell a certain story or freeze a moment of effervescent beauty around us. The world around us carries around fleeting moments of beauty, and I wanted my works to capture those beautiful instances”

Cheyne’s entry - click to view each photo larger.

“I live in Chinatown. My entry is about me blending into the world around me. From a homeless man (who becomes invisible to most) to a ghostly image to my own tribute to Liu Bolin, it’s about becoming part of the environment.”

  • Name: Ji Sub Jeong
  • Birthplace: South Korea
  • Strengths: Creativity and diligence
  • Weaknesses: Lack of experience in photography
  • Blog: http://jisubjeong.tumblr.com

Our second Photoboxer is a freshman at the Rhode Island School of Design. One quick glance at his blog will reveal that what he lacks in professional experience, he makes up for in creativity and flexibility.

His experimental photography and artistic skill can carry him far in the competition, but does he have what it takes to survive the photo challenges in genres he hasn’t touched yet?

“I’ve always had a very strong love for art. I was always drawing and doodling on any piece of paper that I could find. The ability to be able to create something that is both full of meanings and visually pleasing is what really motivated me to help me put myself in the art world.”

We shall see when he competes in the first Photoboxing match, taking place soon!
