With my photos I wanted to subvert the typical notion of nightlife photography. We see a flood of homogenous nightlife photos posted every week taken at the various venues around town shot with a dslr and a strobe, and I wanted to challenge and shift the norm and present my own version of the reality of night; darkness, anonymous figures, confusion, fire and weirdness.
Riana’s entries for “Nightlife”:
I chose Nightlife as the theme because it’s more of my element and I haven’t seen a Photoboxing match with this theme yet. These photos showcase different perspectives of nightlife. The first two photos are at Manifest where I shoot Get Right on Wednesday nights. The first photo is from an attendee’s perspective, lots of fun, lights, and inebriation. The second photo is from DJ Delve’s perspective, he sees his turntables and the crowd but the main focus is on him. The last photo shows nightlife with my mom, or “Mutha Vicky.” She’s a 62-year-old Fiipino biddy and she doesn’t even know how Internet famous she is. This photo was totally unposed.
