John Hook’s entries for “Light in the Darkness”

First, I’ve always wanted to redo the classic Morton Salt image “When it rains, it pours”, and for my modern updated version, I had “When it rains, it Flames” in my mind.  Sophia was an absolute perfect model, and all I had to do was add the “Flame”.  We used steel wool pads, set them on fire, and spun the pad around creating a rain of sparks.  Dangerous and awesome all at once.  
For the second image, I just really wanted to see how wild we could make an image with flying sparks.  A 2 second exposure, and a shit load of a parents worst nightmare.
The last image is Astrolapin, if you’re not familiar, he’s an astronaut bunny.  I created a nice little space environment for him (in my living room).  Floating in space amongst the universe, 15 second exposure, flashes, gels, and black construction paper with a lot of holes in it.

While the Photoboxers are working on their photos, let’s get to know the challenger Jonas Maon:

  • From: Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Strengths: Events, candids, run-and-gun-shoot-on-the-fly environments
  • Weaknesses: One-on-ones (I’m shy)

I’ve known Jonas for a while now. He’s taken my lighting workshop, so I know his lighting is strong (kidding, it was strong before he took my workshop) but what I remember most about Jonas is his ability to capture everything. Whether he’s shooting for Nonstop Honolulu or for private events, he’s always at events and seems to thrive where mass groups of people mingle. Magically, amongst all the madness and mass, he captures strong images that help tell the full story.

I am excited to have him on board and can’t wait to see what he comes up with for Match #007: Light in the Darkness.
